Overview/Series Synopsis

Code: Lyoko is a French cartoon series featuring both anime-style and computer-generated imagery, produced by Antefilms during the first season and MoonScoop during the second, in association with the France 3 television network and Canal J. Code: Lyoko is about a group of four boarding school students enrolled at Kadic Junior High School, named Jeremie, Odd, Ulrich, and Yumi. The students try to help a digital girl named Aelita leave the virtual world of Lyoko (found inside a supercomputer housed in the basement of an abandoned factory near the school), and enter the real world.

A megalomaniac digital entity named XANA, bent on world domination has taken over the supercomputer in charge of Lyoko. (There is some debate as to whether XANA is the supercomputer itself, or the virus infecting it; see XANA.) If the group is able to get Aelita to the activated tower(s) out of the more than forty scattered about Lyoko's five regions, she can deactivate XANA's attack; then the supercomputer can reverse time to just before the attack, leaving no one except Team Lyoko to remember any of the events that transpired. To complicate the situation, they must do this while ensuring their classmates and teachers are not killed (because going back in time cannot bring back those killed by XANA), and deal with the various personality clashes they have with them at the same time.

Template:Spoiler-about In order to stop XANA, Odd, Ulrich and Yumi enter the virtual world to help Aelita get past XANA's guard monsters and deactivate the tower. Jeremie operates the supercomputer from a laboratory terminal in the factory, to keep track of the situation in Lyoko, warn them of danger, and to monitor their "life points". (Life points are a measure of their viability inside the virtual universe, similar to hit points in computer and video games or role-playing games.) If one of the virtualized players loses their life points, they merely "devirtualize"; however, as Aelita lives inside the virtual world, if she were to lose all of her life points, she would be lost forever.

Eventually the group manages to materialize Aelita; but they find that XANA has infected her with a virus that prevents her from being able to survive if the supercomputer is turned off. Aelita continues to live on Earth, but must still deactivate the towers. She can only be devirtualized by Jeremie through a tower, unlike the others, who return to the real world if they lose all their life points.

In "Unchartered Territory", the group discovers a mysterious fifth sector of Lyoko, known as Carthage. It is accessed by traveling to the boundaries of any of the main Lyoko regions, and Jeremie then entering the access code SCIPIO. While most sectors resemble normal environments seen on Earth, Carthage is a massive white sphere floating in virtual space. Four data streams on equidistant sides of the sphere provide access to the four main regions. The interior is a maze that changes with each visit. Each time someone arrives in the region, a three-minute timer starts up. Should the visitor(s) not manage to reach the deactivation switch, the region closes up and traps them inside. XANA resides in this sector and all of his data can be accessed through a panel on the outside surface of the sphere.

A further problem lies in that XANA is a quantum computer; in "A Great Day", Jeremie theorized that XANA's capacity to gain strength may come from time reversion's effect of increasing the base of XANA's calculation capacity qubits. The heroes now refrain as much as possible from reverting time, so that XANA's power growth is kept in check. Therefore, they must be exceptionally careful to ensure the integrity of the present time stream. This has proven more difficult in recent episodes, such as "Attack of the Zombies" and "Ultimatum". Even without the jumps to increase his power, XANA seems to get stronger with each attack.

In the most recent episode, "Franz Hopper", a tower was shown in the fifth sector, otherwise known as Carthage. It is unclear if this is the only tower in the region. In that same episode, he also manages to activate five other towers at the same time. Template:Endspoiler

The Lyoko Gang (A.K.A. Team Lyoko)

The Lyoko Gang or Team Lyoko are the ones who travel to Lyoko to foil XANA's plans against humanity.

Their names are:

Aelita requires the protection of the other four in order to deactivate the towers on Lyoko.

Secondary Characters

Elisabeth "Sissi" Delmas

File:Sissi-lyoko.jpg
Elisabeth "Sissi" Delmas

The daughter of the school's principal, Jean-Pierre Delmas she considers herself to be the most attractive girl in school. She is attracted to Ulrich (who does not feel the same way) and is jealous of Yumi. Undoubtedly snobbish, during the first season she only rarely showed a more emphatic side. However, she admits in one episode that all she wants is to be accepted by Jeremie and the others.

Later, in the second season, she shows a nicer side, but it still seems to be self serving. However, it does give her some depth as a character rather than just being an annoying antagonist. Sometimes, she even helps the Lyoko warriors achieve victory.

Jim ("Jimbo") Moralés

Jim is Kadic's school physical education teacher and handyman/campus-supervisor. He's rough around the edges and quite strict, but despite this he does actually like his charges, except for Aelita, whom he thinks is too weird to be in the school. He became involved with the Lyoko cause in "False Start", but has no memory of the experience due to the time regression following the attack. In "St. Valentine's Day", he expresses an interest in Suzanne Hertz. He also expresses an interest in the school nurse in "XANA's Kiss".

William Dunbar

File:Williamcodelyoko.jpg
William

William is a new student as of the second season. He was kicked out of his old school, apparently, for plastering love letters all over the school. He is also an admirer of Yumi; in "Marabounta" he indicates to Ulrich that, if Ulrich does not express his feelings to Yumi by the next school day, he (William) will pursue her romantically himself.

Approximately Yumi's age, he has exhibited common sense and ability to take charge in danger situations ("Attack of the Zombies"), though his well-meaning restraint of Jeremie, Odd, and Aelita slowed the team's response to a XANA crisis, never believing Team Lyoko at all.

It is also revealed in the episode "Vertigo" that William has a fear of spiders. In another episode, it's shown that he can't dance.

Quite a few episodes have proven that William was usually a very kind hearted person, but he could be quite mean when he needs (or wants) to be.

XANA

File:XANA symbol lyoko.jpg
The "Eye of XANA," seen in objects/persons it possesses.

There is some debate as to the precise nature of XANA. Currently, there are two main schools of thought on its nature.

One group suggests that the name is given to the supercomputer itself, within which resides the code that gives Lyoko its existence and reality. The supercomputer, it is believed, has achieved artificial intelligence, to a near- or beyond-human level of sentience. This identification may be suggested by the scenes where we see the actual hardware of the supercomputer. On the front panel, near the large knife-pull power switch, is the symbol commonly called the Eye of XANA (see below). This suggests that XANA should be the identification of the machine. Also, when Aelita enters a tower, the Eye of XANA appears as the platform, which suggests that the Eye of XANA could also be the symbol for Lyoko.

The other group suggests that XANA is virus that corrupted the supercomputer and achieved sentience through the vast processing power it provided. Their arguement is supported by the fact that shutting down the sumpercomuter does not have any affect on XANA, suggesting contaminated kernel programs in the operating system.

Whichever is the proper identity, XANA wishes to take over the real world, using one fundamental strategy: destruction. It has yet to be shown as itself in a known physical form; however, he has spoken through others on multiple occasions.

Franz Hopper

Template:Spoiler Franz Hopper, as we discover in the second season, is the creator of the supercomputer and thus the creator of Aelita, Lyoko, and XANA. He was also a science teacher at the school (though the staff at the school seems to not have any recollection of him). From what has been revealed by the show, Lyoko probably was created by Franz as a military project to use as a possible weapon or training simulator. Dates on various images suggest that the project was started sometime in the early seventies. For some as yet unknown reason, the project was abandoned sometime around the early ninties. The continued existence of the supercomputer suggests that Franz continued his work despite that fact. Franz has/had a wife who appears to be pregnant. She looks a lot like Aelita.

Franz Hopper left behind a large set of CDs containing his diaries and notes. Jeremie was able to copy the disks and was able to decrypt some parts of them. Jeremie also reveals that Hopper is trapped within Lyoko at the end of the episode "Franz Hopper". Template:Endspoiler

Other Characters

Émilie LeDuc (English: Emily)

Emily appeared to be a possible alternate love interest for Ulrich in the first season. Tall, dark haired and generally quiet - but with a mean enough temper when riled - she seems to show interest in Ulrich, but does not chase him the way Sissi does.

When an incident occured in "Swarming Attack" that caused Odd and Jeremie to think that Ulrich had a secret admirer, Odd deduced that the non-existent secret admirer was Emily. Later, in "Routine", Ulrich wondered if Emily might be interested in him and began talking to her. This association seems to have ended.

Hervé Pichon and Nicolas Poliakoff (English: Herve & Nicolas)

These two are Sissi's "cronies"; they act as her minions and follow her orders. Both of them dislike Ulrich, who refutes Sissi's affections. They also dislike Yumi and Odd for other reasons. Herve has a personal vendetta against Jeremie because they are academic rivals. He also often seems to have feelings for Sissi. Nicolas also has a very good knack for drumming as seen in "Seeing is Believing."

Jean-Pierre Delmas

Jean-Pierre is the Headmaster of Kadic Junior High School. He is also Sissi's father, which gives reason for Ulrich and the gang to suck-up a little.

Kiwi

Kiwi is Odd's lovable dog. While Kiwi might not be a student, he still boards secretly at Kadic with Odd. In fact, pets are not allowed at Kadic, so Kiwi has gotten Odd into trouble on more than one occasion. That rule may change, however. Kiwi looks like a Whippet, but his breed is still on official debate.

Milly Solovieff and Tamiya Diop

Kadic's two unofficial newscasters are Milly and Tamiya. Milly has a big crush on Ulrich, and as seen in "Teddygodzilla", she is very sensitive about it. They are in the seventh grade.

Mrs. Meyer

Mrs. Meyer is the math teacher. Jeremie usually finishes her tests early and does extremely well. On at least one occasion, however, Jeremie has given her a factually correct verbal statement as an answer to an unrelated question and received a zero as a result.

Samantha

Seen only once in the episode "Rock Bottom", Samantha is just one of the many girls that Odd has dated over the course of the show. Samantha is slightly different from the rest in that she does not attend school at Kadic. From what little we see of her, we learn that her family is not well off finacially. She attempts to steal one of the school's laptops and Odd gets in trouble by covering for her. As a result of a XANA attack, she ends up being brought to the factory. A time reversion wipes out any memory of the visit. She hasn't been seen since that episode.

Suzanne Hertz

Suzanne Hertz is the science teacher. She is probably more strict than any other teacher at Kadic. On more than one occasion she's made a student look foolish for one thing or another. It also seems that XANA attacks during her class more often than any other class.

Taelia

Taelia was a very mysterious girl, seen only once in the first season episode "The Girl of the Dreams". Upon seeing her after losing contact with Aelita, Jeremie began to think that Taelia was in fact Aelita materialized on Earth, but with total amnesia. However, despite her similar appearance, she was very rude to Team Lyoko, especially Jeremie and Yumi, seeing them as a very strange (possibly disturbed) group. Jeremie brought her to the factory to protect her from a suit of samurai armor that XANA had possessed (one of Yumi's family heirlooms). She ended up leaving the factory and bringing the principal and the police to the factory; the police almost arrested Jeremie. Jeremie finally realized that his love for Aelita can sometimes cloud his mind.

Yolande Perraudin

Yolande Perraudin is the school nurse. She is often bewildered by the "afflictions" (caused by XANA) that manage to befall those at Kadic. In the first season, she was addressed by the name, Dorothy. They have since switched to her French name.

Kadic Junior High School

Kadic Junior High School is where Team Lyoko, as well as everyone else in the show, goes for either school or work. Pictures in the Trivia section show that it's located in Boulogne-Billancourt, outside of Paris. Most of XANA's attacks are usually focused on the school seeing as how Team Lyoko is there most of the time. Kadic Junior High School is a boarding school so most of the students live in the on-campus dorms. A few, such as Yumi Ishiyama, live off-campus with their families.

Monsters

There are several types of monsters in Lyoko. XANA creates them in order to keep the towers he activates safe. Some are a mere nuisence while others are a major threat. The ones that can be considered a nuisence make up for this fact by traveling in packs. All of them, however, try to impede Team Lyoko. The monsters remain until they are destroyed or a return trip is activated. Odd Della Robbia, Ulrich Stern and Yumi Ishiyama each have special weapons in Lyoko in order to kill the monsters. Aelita Stones mostly relies on the protection of the others when it comes to dealing with the monsters.

XANA has 11 types of monsters so far, they are:

Jeremie has also produced a monster. It's called the Marabounta. It only appears in the episode "Marabounta".

Lyoko

Lyoko is a virtual world, supposedly created by Franz Hopper, his wife, and a team of scientists seen in the ending credits. Aelita is the only inhabitant of this place. According to the homepage for the show, it was orginally meant to be a digital paradise.

Lyoko has 5 sectors and a surrounding nothingness called the "Digital Void" or "Digital Sea". In order, the various parts are:

The original airing order on Cartoon Network does not reflect the actual order of the episodes. They have aired several episodes in the wrong order. The order above reflects the episode numbering shown in each episode.

Seasons 3 and 4

MoonScoop previously announced that many networks had ordered 45 new episodes for the third season, set to air throughout 2006 and 2007. There was some confusion whether to this being real or not, and it has been stated slightly differently.

According to an interview (in French) on http://www.codelyoko.net/ with one of the writers from the show, two new seasons have been ordered. The third season will be 15 episodes long and will serve to bridge the gap between the second and fourth seasons (and will most likely air in spring of 2006). The fourth season will be 30 episodes long and will go even deeper into the history of Franz Hopper and Lyoko (and will most likely air from fall 2006 to spring 2007). XANA will still be around, obviously. There will also be an original animated prequel, medium-length film about how the group originally discovered Lyoko and got their powers in and out of Lyoko. It will be approximately 52 minutes long. Cartoon Network currently has it ordered, whereas other stations have not agreed on anything and may have it release straight-to-DVD in France.

The new seasons will be publicized with merchandising, such as toys, clothes, water bottles, skateboards, and other such goods. There will also be a video game on the Nintendo DS handheld platform, set to release with the new season in fall 2006.

Show Changes From Season to Season

Season 1 to 2

  • New monsters will be frequently added, as happened in the first season.
  • According to the commercials, Team Lyoko will expand a bit to include new members. At this stage of writing, it appears that Aelita is the only new member; this may change. Sissi and Jim are two most possible candidates for this position.
  • Where the first season was a standard "episodic" format (the heroes solve the problem, revert time, and wait for the next attack), the second season has taken more of a story arc approach, with some stories building on the one(s) previous. Also, time regression's are fewer now, due to the fact that it makes XANA stronger.

Template:Spoiler

  • Attention is being paid to a deserted house across the woods from the Kadic campus, named "The Hermitage", which was once owned by a physicist named Franz Hopper. Several of Aelita's visions/nightmares have centered around this house, and clues were discovered here leading to Hopper's encrypted disk-based diary; this may contain information vital to the mission.
  • It was in the Hermitage that Aelita, after a series of flash-backs, discovers a doll that she remembers calling Mister Pück in an almost deja vu like fashion, because she previously had no solid memory of ever seeing the doll before. The fact, however, that she was even able to discover the doll in the first place proves otherwise. In one of Aelita's visions, she sees a real Mister Pück running and hiding in a tree trunk from wolves. Mister Pück wears a strange outfit, perfectly fitting for the name Puck, which in pagan and Christian mythologies was the name of a naughty forest sprite, or spirit. Included in his strange outfit, he also has two pink tails.
  • After finding the Mister Pück doll, a key is discovered inside of it, unintentionally thanks to Sissi, that opens a train station locker. Inside the locker was a case of CDs, which Jeremie discovers is the diary of Franz Hopper. The CDs, however, are heavily encrypted, which has proven a challenge for even someone of Jeremie's wisdom. XANA later destroyed the CDs when it possessed Jeremie. Thankfully, before-hand, Jeremie was able to copy the encrypted CDs into a restricted section of the supercomputer that he alone could access.
  • The new ending of Code: Lyoko shows that Aelita may have once been human. The man shown in the credits, Franz Hopper, married someone that bears a striking similarity to Aelita. Because of that, some speculate he could have used his daughter as a test subject for him and his team's virtualization project. In order for this to be true, Aelita must have been very young to not remember her parents, or Franz could have attempted to erase her memory due to XANA's rebellion. This might be why XANA would want her memory so badly.
  • In one of the photographs of Franz and his wife that appears in the second season, she appears to be pregnant.
  • Apparently, Jeremie can "Jeremify" people like XANA. He used Odd to fight off the possessed nurse, while the rest went to Lyoko. This may prove useful in later episodes.

Template:Endspoiler

  • Each member of Team Lyoko recieves vehicles. Yumi gets a hover scooter called an "Overwing", Ulrich gets a one-wheeled motorcycle called an "Overbike", and Odd gets a hover skateboard called an "Overboard". All three vehicles can fly. Aelita usually rides as a passenger with either Odd or Yumi, but she has ridden with Ulrich on occasion. When she's alone on Lyoko, she usually uses the Overboard or the Overwing, but she has used all three vehicles at least once.
  • Aelita spends much more time in the Material World in the second season. She even becomes enrolled at Kadic in the first episode of the second season, "New Order", under the name of Aelita Stones, posing as a cousin of Odd.
  • Jeremie has developed a new super-scanner that detects activated towers instantly.
  • The CG quality improves noticeably in Lyoko. Even the 3-D versions of Yumi, Odd, Ulrich, and Aelita look more up-to-date.
  • Taelia is same as Talia in the first season. Talia was only seen in one episode ("The Girl of the Dreams") and has the same hair as Aelita. Her general appearance is also a close match to Aelita. Her voice also sounds exactly like Aelita's (her gasping and screaming, as an example). However, Taelia was a one-episode character and she might never appear again.

Trivia

  • In the episode "Attack of the Zombies" there are many similarities to Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and Shaun of the Dead (a parody of the others) because when they hid in the lunch room, they were constantly arguing and the zombies had a bluish color. It was even at night. Also, William even attacked Jeremy for trying to mutiny his leadership, a direct reference to Ben shooting Harry Copper in Night of the Living Dead.
  • Back in 2001, AnteFilms made a pilot or precursor, for Code: Lyoko called Garage Kids. Overall, the character designs were similar, but several stark differences exist, such as: Lyoko is called "Xanadu". The antagonist appeared and acted very much like XANA in Code: Lyoko, but was given no name in Garage Kids. Characters such as Yumi, with her telekinesis were able to exert their special powers outside of Lyoko. Aelita seems to not exist in Garage Kids. The outfits for the virtualized characters are drastically different, appearing to be designed from the older eras of an Eastern country. The overall state of the computer-generated imagery in Garage Kids is poorly executed, in almost second-rate video-game starkness, when compared to the smooth, realistic Code: Lyoko computer-generated imagery.
  • Aelita's name may be Russian in origin, and based on the title character from the 1924 Soviet movie Aelita. See also the IMDb article.
  • The supercomputer is often referred to in the English broadcasts as the "super calculator". This is a direct translation of the French term super calculateur. (Source: Tele2France.)
  • In the beginning of "A Fine Mess", Ulrich flips a coin to see who would come first out of the scanners. A fast eye will catch that the coin is a euro. Also note that the drink machine on campus uses euros.
  • XANA's apparent proclivity for focusing on attacking Yumi has become extremely noticeable to some fans, who noticed the phenomenon in five consecutive episodes of the first season. This event is often referred to as "Pick on Yumi Week" by some fans.
  • Yumi has a Totoro doll - a character that looks like a giant bunny or cat from the japanese animated movie, "My Neighbor Totoro", in her room ("Laughing Fit"). However, after this episode, it is replaced with an unnamed stuffed cat.
  • In recent episodes, it seems that XANA has decided to go after Jeremie. The reason for this is unknown. In two back-to-back episodes, XANA tries to kill him. First, he blocks his airways, and almost succeeds in killing him. Then, he tries to choke him to death. (This is not as noticable, but he is the only character the XANA phantom-thing directly attacks.)
  • In Hong Kong, Code: Lyoko is called 至Net奇兵 (which means the smartest gang) but not 密碼 : 利奧高( 利奧高 or 李奧高 are the sound translation of Lyoko in chinese) or 代號 : 利奧高 which have the same meaning of Code: Lyoko.
    • However, as of this writing, Code: Lyoko has not been dubbed into Japanese, despite Yumi being from Japan.
  • Many people in the U.S. find Code: Lyoko somewhat similar in certain ways to The Matrix, possibly due to the similar theme of battling in a virtual world against an evil artifical intelligence. There's also many similarities between the code seen in the background of scenes involving the supercomputer and the code seen in The Matrix. Another similarity might be the presance of Residual Self Image, in which a person's subconscious influences their appearance in a virtual world. In The Matrix this means a change of clothing and removal of "holes" and "plugs" from the hacker's body. In Lyoko it is visable to varying degrees, but is mostly seen with Odd, who is a virtual shrine to his dog, Kiwi. Aileta also looks slightly similar to her doll, Mr. Puck.
