(1731) Smuts is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 9 August 1948 by E. L. Johnson , from the Union Observatory in Johannesburg , was discovered off.
The asteroid bears the name of the South African statesman and general JC Smuts , under whom Johnson served in both world wars.
