(1762) Russell is a major belt asteroid . He was born on October 8, 1953 at the Goethe Link Observatory at Brooklyn (Indiana) within the Indiana Asteroid Program of the Indiana University discovered.

It was named in honor of Henry Norris Russell , an American astronomer.
