(17945) Hawass is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 14 May 1999 by Australian amateur astronomer John Broughton at his private observatory , the Reedy Creek Observatory ( IAU code 428) in Queensland was discovered Australia.

The asteroid was named after the Egyptian Egyptologist Zahi Hawass (* 1947), who, as General Secretary of the Egyptian Antiquities Administration ( Supreme Council of Antiquities , SCA), ensured that Egyptology received greater attention from the international media and the world.
