(18426) Maffei is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on December 18, 1993 by the Italian amateur astronomers Enrico Colzani and Graziano Ventre at the Osservatorio Astronomico Sormano ( IAU code 587) in the province of Como .
The asteroid was named on September 21, 2002 after the Italian astronomer Paolo Maffei (1926–2009), who headed the Catania observatory in Sicily and who discovered the largest members of the Maffei group named after him .
