(39540) Borchert is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on April 11, 1991 by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .

The asteroid was named on November 20, 2002 after the German writer Wolfgang Borchert (1921–1947), who was one of the best-known authors of so-called rubble literature after the Second World War .
