(4068) Menestheus was discovered on September 19, 1973 by Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels . It is assigned to the Lagrangian point L 4 .

The asteroid bears the name of the mythological king Menestheus of Athens .
