(4487) Pocahontas is an asteroid from Amor type that on 17 October 1987 by Carolyn S. Shoemaker at Mount Palomar was discovered.

The asteroid is named after the legendary figure Pocahontas , an Indian who is said to have appeared in Eastern Virginia at the beginning of the 17th century as a mediator between the Virginia-Algonquin tribes and the British colonists .
