(536) Merapi is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 11 May 1904 by the American astronomer George Henry Peters was discovered.

The asteroid was named after the Merapi volcano in Sumatra , Indonesia . The discoverer took part in an expedition to observe the solar eclipse on May 18, 1901.
