(55735) Magdeburg is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on August 22, 1987 by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg .

It was named on August 6, 2003 after the city of Magdeburg , the capital of the German state Saxony-Anhalt .
