It was discovered on September 24, 1960 at the Palomar Observatory by Tom Gehrels and the astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld .
The asteroid was named after the German sculptor and graphic artist Wilhelm Lehmbruck .
