/ e / is a Google-free, LineageOS- based operating system with its own web services that was launched by the French software developer and founder of the Mandrake Linux distribution , Gaël Duval .

history

Since Gaël Duval is dissatisfied with the lack of data protection and the Android user interface , he founded eelo in December 2017, which was later renamed / e / due to trademark problems. Duval successfully sought financial support on the crowdfunding platforms Kickstarter and Indiegogo , with a financing target of € 25,000, which was exceeded after a short time. The non-profit foundation "e Foundation" was founded in May 2018.

The first beta version of / e / based on Android 7.1 was released in September 2018 . This beta version is available for 92 different smartphone models (March 2020). The first stable version based on Android 8.1 should be published in early 2019, but was later announced for the Mobile World Congress in February 2020 . Since August 4, 2019, refurbished smartphones with a pre-installed / e / can be purchased in a shop that is decoupled from the "e Foundation". The Fairphone 3 has been available since April 30, 2020, the first smartphone with / e / pre-installed and therefore without limitation of the warranty. The beta version of / e / is available for 93 smartphones and 2 tablets (June 2020), depending on the device, the underlying Android version is 7 “Nougat”, 8 “Oreo” or 9 “Pie”.

development

/ e / consists of various existing open source projects and in-house developments. For example, the system is based on LineageOS and is delivered with the free replica of the Google services microG. Some of the preinstalled standard apps are forks of the corresponding LineageOS applications: For example, the SMS app is an offshoot of QKSMS. All preinstalled apps are open source; the only exception is the map and navigation service Magic Earth. Signal and Telegram are no longer installed ex works in newer / e / versions. Contacts and files can be synchronized with a Nextcloud server via the DavDroid or Nextcloud app, e.g. B. with the / e / own cloud. A / e / account is required for this. The Mozilla Network Location Provider is used to determine the location. In-house developments, however, are z. B. the Bliss Launcher and the Icon Pack.
