Ásmegin is a folk metal - band from Norway .

Band history

Ásmegin was founded in 1998 by Marius Olaussen, Iving Mundilfarne and Auðrvinr Sigurdsson. A few months after the founding, Tomas Torgersbråten and Skule “Nordalv” Jarl joined them, so that a full metal band line-up was available. Iving Mundilfarne left the band in 1999 shortly before the recording of the demo Naar Rimkalkene Heves ( Eng . Because the cups are raised ). This first demo was released on Valgalder Records, Marius Olaussen's label. In 2000 the second demo Af Helvegum ( Ger . After Helheim ) was recorded. The band broke up until Tomas Torgersbråten and Marius Olaussen found new members in 2001 with Bjørn Olav "Ship of Fools" Holter, Tommy Brandt and in 2002 with Raymond Håkenrud.

With this line-up, Ásmegin recorded the debut album Hin Vordende Sod & Sø (German The Coming Broth and Soup ) in the Top Room Studio in 2002 , which was released on October 14, 2003 via Napalm Records . Guest musicians were Lars Fredrik Frøislie ( White Willow , Wobbler ) on keyboard , Lars Nedland ( Borknagar , Solefald ) with vocals , Ingvild "Sareeta" Johannesen ( Ram-Zet ) with violin and vocals, Anne Marie Hveding with vocals, Oddrun Hegge with Norwegian Zither , Gunhild Førland with flute and Anja Hegge Thorsen on harp . Bjørn Olav Holter left the band before signing a four-album deal with Napalm Records in 2003, but was quickly replaced by Erik Fossan Rasmussen ( Deject ), Lars Nedland and Ingvild Johannesen.

Shortly before the recordings for the next album, Lars Fredrik Frøislie joined the band, but Tommy Brandt, Lars Nedland and Ingvild Johannesen left Ásmegin. On November 28, 2008, Arv, the band's second studio album, was released on Napalm Records, five years after the debut album was released. Erik Fossan Rasmussen took over the guttural singing and also played the drums. Raymond Håkenrud played guitar, bass and piano. Marius Olaussen also took over guitar and bass parts and also played mandolin , accordion , piano and mellotron . Keyboard and organ played like on the debut album Lars Fredrik Frøislie. Guest musicians were Martin Nordrum Kneppen on drums (in the song Prunkende, stolt i Jokumsol ), Gunhild Hovden Kvangarsnes and, as on the previous album, Anne Marie Hveding as singer and Karolin Broosch on violin. According to Marius Olaussen, the band that was actually working on the concept album Tusind tabte Siæles Kakofoni had come under pressure as Napalm Records pushed for the release. For example, old song material had to be used for the Arv and, due to the lack of drummer Erik Fossan Rasmussen, the drums had to be brought in.

style

Concept and texts

The name of the band is Old Norse and means 'With the power of the gods'. The lyrics are also written in Norwegian or Old Norse .

music

Ásmegin play folk metal using instruments such as mandolin, accordion, flute, harp, piano and Hammond organ in addition to the typical rock instrumentation and are also characterized by a great variety of voices. On the debut album Hin Vordende Sod & Sø, guttural vocals alternate with clean male and female voices. Often choral, mostly three-part singing is also used. The drum parts, which were recorded by Tommy Brandt, are very fast throughout the album, with the double bass playing technique being used predominantly . On the second studio album Arv , the male voice is mostly growled , but clear vocals are also used. In addition, the two guest singers Kvangarsnes and Hveding take on extensive vocal parts. In contrast to the previous album, the drums recorded by Erik Fossan Rasmussen are significantly slower and more reserved.
