Áurea Carolina de Freitas e Silva (known by the two first names Áurea Carolina ; born November 20, 1983 in Tucuruí , Pará ) is a Brazilian politician and has been a Federal MP for Minas Gerais in the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress since February 1, 2019 . She is a member of the Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL).

The Afro-Brazilian is committed to the inclusion of women, young people and the black population and is committed to the LGBT movement, politically she is a Marxist .

Life

Áurea Carolina was born in the state of Pará, but studied and began her political career in the state of Minas Gerais. She graduated from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte in the field of social sciences , specialized in gender and equality issues at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and, back in Minas Gerais, received her master's degree in political science from the federal university there.

In 2016 she joined the Partido Socialismo e Liberdade and ran for the local elections in Brazil in 2016 as a councilor in the megacity of Belo Horizonte. It received the highest number of votes with 17,420 valid votes.

With her counterpart Cida Falabella , also a member of the PSOL, she practiced a joint mandate, so they also worked in the same room, the attempt became known as Gabinetona .

Already in the elections in Brazil in 2018 she ran for a federal deputy after she resigned from the city council on November 9, 2018. With the fifth largest number of votes of 162,740 valid votes, it won the first victory for the PSOL in a federal election.

In March 2019 she was included in the list of the “Most Influencial People of African Descent” among the 100 most influential young Afro-Brazilians in politics and government.
