Äffle and Pferdle are two cartoon characters from the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR), today Südwestrundfunk (SWR). They were used as a commercial separator between the spots in short recordings on commercial television of the early evening program of the first broadcast in the SWR broadcasting area . The aim is to make the audience laugh through Swabian short films.

history

The figures were developed in 1959 by the film producer Armin Lang and the graphic artists Werner Klein and Volker Lang on behalf of the then SDR with the aim of loosening up the then newly broadcast commercials. Only after the Stuttgart heraldic animal was a horse, which first appeared on the screen on January 2, 1960 at the start of advertising television. In 1963 a monkey was added, both were called Swabian Äffle and Pferdle .

Over the years, the two characters developed. Initially limited to small scenes, the clips increasingly benefited from the comic interaction between the two. The environment of the Äffle-und-Pferdle-Einspieler also changed, initially in black and white and only with music, the two became colored in the late 1960s and began to speak a few years later. Draftsman Armin Lang gave them his voice. It was obvious that the two characters should speak Swabian instead of High German, although Lang himself was not a Swabian, but a Bavarian. Their appearance also became increasingly human-like .

Due to their great popularity, longer clips were occasionally produced, including several in which the two cartoon characters sang. The best known is their oat and banana blues , but also their version of Auf de Schwäbsche Eisebahne .

In 1986 both Swabians were joined by the Palatinate dog lady Schlabbinchen , spoken by the actress Elsbeth Janda . The horse was also the mascot of the European Athletics Championships in 1986 in Stuttgart.

After the death of Armin Lang in 1996, his production company initially released additional spots under the direction of his son of the same name, which were dubbed by Peter Barkow and also by Elsbeth Janda. In 2001, Südwestrundfunk stopped producing new clips with reference to the large number of existing spots and the production costs. Spots that had already been produced continued to be broadcast. In 2004 all spots produced between 1960 and 1999 appeared on two DVDs .

Marketing consultant, journalist and television presenter Heiko Volz has been thinking up the Äffle-und-Pferdle stories since 1999 , which are published in SWR calendars, books and on the Internet. Since then, the two have been drawn by the illustrators Roman Lang, Alexander Linke and Jürgen Hölzel.

In 2010 Äffle and Pferdle got new dubbing voices. The Äffle is spoken by the author Volz, the Pferdle by Volker Lang, the younger brother of the late Armin Lang.

Since 2011, the team of authors Heiko Volz and Roman Lang have published books annually at Thienemann-Esslinger. Actors in life-size figure masks are used for promotional appearances.

In 2016, Äffle and Pferdle made it to number 9 for the first time with their oat and banana blues and in 2018 to number 5 for the third time in the top ten of the SWR1 hit parade . At the 2016 German Choir Festival, Äffle & Pferdle alias Heiko Volz and Volker Lang sang John Lennon's Imagine on the stage of Stuttgart's Schlossplatz. Your Imagine -Video was clicking winner of the SWR online choir. In the same year, the chocolate manufacturer Ritter Sport produced a special Äffle und Pferdle edition with oats and bananas.

Äffle and Pferdle have had a fan club since 1993. He is based in Heidenheim, publishes a quarterly club booklet and organizes annual club meetings. In January 2017, after there had been a Mainzelmännchen traffic light in Mainz since November 2016, he initiated an online petition for an Äffle and Pferdle traffic light in Stuttgart, which reached the quorum within a week.

After a 16-year television break, Äffle and Pferdle returned to television. The SWR television brings the two cult figures since May 2017 every Friday at the end of Landesschau Baden-Wuerttemberg , no more than gimmicks or bumpers, but in a separate 3-minute format, but with no new spots.

The Äffle and Pferdle voices Heiko Volz and Volker Lang have been singing the oat and banana blues live at concerts with the Swabian rock band Muggabatschr since October 2017.

At the beginning of 2020, the established voices of Volz and Lang were exchanged for comedian Markus Zipperle. Although the replacement was described as risk management, the decision of the rights holder Armin Lang was heavily criticized. The fact that he took his own uncle and co-inventor from the team met with displeasure. Also that both previous speakers should only have found out about their new cast from the media, angry fans and those involved. In May it became known that Volz and Lang were leaving Lang Film-Medienproduktion together. As the dubbing voices of Äffle & Pferdle, they continue to perform live.
