Åke Gustafsson

Åke Gustafsson (born April 8, 1908 in Stockholm , † November 14, 1988 in Lund ) was a Swedish botanist and geneticist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ A. Gust. ".

Gustafsson studied in Lund and received his doctorate there in 1935 with a dissertation on parthenogenesis . From 1947 he was department head and from 1962 to 1968 professor at the Swedish State Forest Research Institute (Statens Skogsforskningsinstitut) and from 1968 professor of genetics in Lund.

He was known for mutation breeding of higher plants (using X-rays and gamma rays), with a particular interest in barley. He had a great influence on plant breeding in Sweden. He was a staunch opponent of Lysenkoism in Sweden.

In 1949 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture, in 1951 the Physiographical Society in Lund, 1960 the Leopoldina , 1966 the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and 1967 the National Academy of Sciences .

In 1959 he received the Darwin badge .

He was also an essayist and poet. In 1932 he married Madeleine Berggren.
