Ève Gran-Aymerich
Ève Gran-Aymerich (born July 22, 1947 in Paris ) is a French archaeologist and historian .
life and work
After studying Classical Philology (Lettres classiques) at the Sorbonne , she submitted a Thèse de doctorat on the history of French archeology from 1798 to 1945 in the Mediterranean and the Middle East in an international context. The work was published under the title “Naissance de l'archéologie moderne. 1798–1945 ” in 1998. In addition, she wrote an extensive encyclopedia on the most important European classical scholars of the same epoch, which was published in 2001 and is an indispensable tool in this field. She worked as a researcher at the CNRS and then at the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres .
Her work deals with the origins and work of French antiquity research institutions in France itself and throughout the Mediterranean region. She always considers the history of archeology and classical studies in an international context, be it with regard to the influences of great politics (the Orient question of the 19th century, the emergence of the colonial empires, the European and world wars), be it with regard to it to the exchange between scientists from European countries. On the basis of the extensive archive material from public files and correspondence of the participating scholars that she has developed, she can be described as one of France's leading researchers in this field. In particular, she is also an outstanding specialist in the field of relationships between German and French classical scholars.
Ève Gran-Aymerich received the Prix François Millepierres of the Académie française in 1991 and the Prix de la Société d'entraide de la Légion d'Honneur in 1992 .
She is married to the archaeologist Jean Gran-Aymerich .
