Émile Ernest Charles Mathis (German: Emil Ernst Karl Mathis ) (born March 15, 1880 in Strasbourg , † August 3, 1956 in Geneva ) was an Alsatian automobile manufacturer.

Career

As the son of a Strasbourg hotelier ( Hôtel à la Ville de Paris ), he went to England at the age of 12 and began his apprenticeship there. Upon his return, he set up an automobile sales, maintenance and repair company in Strasbourg. In 1901 he had business connections with the motor vehicle manufacturer De Dietrich , for which Ettore Bugatti also worked. A year later he met Ettore Bugatti. In the spring of 1904, Émile Mathis and Ettore Bugatti joined forces with the aim of producing a motor vehicle. For this purpose the company Hermes-Simplex was founded, which only existed until 1906. In 1910 he founded Mathis , which manufactured a wide range of reliable vehicles and was very successful before World War II .
