As far as possible and customary, SI units are used. Unless otherwise noted, the data given apply to standard conditions .

4-Dimethylaminophenol (4-DMAP) is an antidote (antidote) in the event of poisoning by cyanides , hydrogen cyanide , nitriles and hydrogen sulfide . The principle of action is based on the formation of methemoglobin to bind free cyanide ions. Hemolysis can occur as a side effect .

The administration of 4-DMAP is only one step to counteract poisoning by cyanide ions. The administration of sodium thiosulfate or hydroxycobalamin is unavoidable.

The administration of 4-DMAP is contraindicated due to its mode of action in smoke gas intoxication, as mixed intoxication with carbon monoxide must always be suspected.

4-DMAP was no longer available on the German market from 2014 to 2017 due to a production changeover. Alternative products therefore had to be used.

Overdose

Methylene blue can be administered as an antidote to an overdose of 4-DMAP (dimethylaminophenol) .

Likelihood of confusion

Due to the identical abbreviations ( 4-DMAP ), it may be confused with 4- (dimethylamino) pyridine , which is not an antidote for hydrocyanic acid poisoning.
