Émilie Desjeux (born October 9, 1861 in Joigny , † April 23, 1957 in Bussy-en-Othe ) was a French painter.

Life

In her youth, Émilie Desjeux moved with the family, who ran a butcher shop, to Paris , where she began to take a serious interest in painting. In Paris, Émilie Desjeux studied at several art schools. At the Académie Julian she became a student of William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905), who emphasized her artistic talent and called her his best student. After graduating from the Académie Julian Desjeux exhibited her works at the Society of French Artists ( French Société des Artistes Français ).

In 1900 she took part in the Paris World's Fair , where she was awarded a medal. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Émilie Desjeux took part in the founding of the Society of Women Artists and opened her art school for girls in Paris on Rue du Bac and later on Rue Visconti . Émilie Desjeux toured Europe, was often in England, Italy and Holland. She processed her impressions in sketch albums and notebooks.

In art, Desjeux was a devotee of academic art and was not influenced by other art movements.

In 1906 Émilie Desjeux was commissioned by the Auxerre City Council to carry out a large painting . A historical event was to be portrayed: On September 4, 1904, Émile Combes , President of the Council in Auxerre, gave his great speech on the separation of church and state. In 1908 the painting “Speech by Émile Combes” (size 252 х 130 cm) was exhibited in the City Museum Auxerre ( Musée Leblanc-Duvernoy ). Canvases, watercolors, pastels, portraits and sketch albums by Émilie Desjeux are brought together in the museum of the Abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre . Some works can be found in private collections.

Émilie Desjeux remained attached to her homeland all her life. She died in 1957 at the age of 95 in Bussy-en-Othe , where she rests in the city cemetery with her parents and her brother.
