The Étang de Canet-Saint-Nazaire or just Étang de Canet is a southern French coastal lake (étang) or a lagoon on the Golfe du Lion on the Mediterranean coast southeast of Perpignan . More than 98% of it is in the commune of Canet-en-Roussillon and less than 2% in the territory of Saint-Nazaire in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in the historical province of Roussillon .
location
The Étang de Canet-Saint-Nazaire, which is about 4 km long, a maximum of 2.5 km wide and about 1 to 4 m deep in the north-south direction , is through - like the Étang de Leucate , which is only about 15 km north a narrow strip of dunes ( spit ) separated from the sea, which is only connected to the lake at one point, namely at the Réart estuary, through a narrow opening (gray) .
ecology
Several small streams or rivers (Llobère, Fosseille, Réart , Agouille de la Mar, Agouille d'En Ferran and Agouille de l'Aygual) flow into the lake, which is hardly less salty than the sea because of its higher evaporation rate.
fauna
The low water exchange with the Mediterranean has led to a gradual eutrophication of the water, so that fishing is hardly possible. The microorganisms are also affected, so that the flamingo colonies that used to live here have disappeared.
flora
In the sandy shores of the lagoon, among others, samphire , purslane wedge-headed , shrub poplars , horse carpets , salt-elephant , prickly pear cactus , milk thistles , beach silverweed and shrub-bushes grow .
Samphire (salicorne)
Purslane wedge (obione faux-pourpier)
Horse carpet (maceron potager)
Beach silverwort (alysson maritime)
