Óscar Magurno

Óscar Magurno Souto (born March 2, 1930 - September 1, 2014 ) was a Uruguayan politician, entrepreneur and sports official.

Óscar Magurno, who comes from a poor background, started his working life at the Asociación Española Primera de Socorros Mutuos at the age of 13 after completing his schooling . He later worked for almost 40 years in a management position at Asociación Española. He eventually rose from deputy managing director to managing director. The professional connection resulted in a friendship with the later Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez , who worked as an oncologist . Magurno, like Vázquez, belonged to the "Gran Logia de la Masonería del Uruguay" (Grand Lodge of the Freemasons of Uruguay). He was also the Comisión Honoraria de Lucha contra el Cáncer (Honorary Commission in the fight against cancer).

The political career of the anti-communist Magurno began in 1981 when he joined the Junta de Vecinos of Montevideo during the civil-military dictatorship. In the elections in Uruguay in 1984 he was elected to the Cámara de Representantes . He stood for the so-called Pachequismo (UCB), which had its origins in the presidency of Jorge Pacheco Areco . He was also re-elected for the subsequent legislative period from 1990 to 1995. From 2000 to 2005 and again from 2000 until his health-related retirement in February of the following year, he represented the Foro Batllista of the Partido Colorado as a member of the Chamber of Deputies . For him, Guillermo Facello moved up as MP. In 2000 he was defeated by Mariano Arana when he was elected Intendente of Montevideo .

Magurno also appeared in various functions as a sports official. From the end of the 1980s he was president of the Club Atlético Welcome basketball club . During the tenure of President Dante Iocco , he also held the deputy chairmanship of Nacional Montevideo . He was also an assessor in the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF). He also chaired the Federación Uruguaya de Boxeo , the Uruguayan boxing association, and was a member of the executive committee of the Club de Pesca Armonía .

In 2010 the politician Fernando Amado wrote a critical biography about him with the title "Óscar Magurno - El padrino".
