The opening direction of doors (often stop (s) direction or open (s) direction ) can refer to whether the leaf of a door opens to the left or right, as well as to whether it opens into or out of a room opens. In the building industry, these directions of hinged doors (and windows) are determined in the planning phase of a building and recorded in the floor plan. The opening direction of a door also determines the type of fittings for it.

As a rule, doors and fittings are installed in such a way that a door leaf swings into a room - i.e. from a traffic area, such as a hallway, into the actual room. Exceptions are sometimes very small rooms, such as toilets or storage rooms, the doors of which can also open from a room in order to be able to enter and use it better.

There are, in some cases, more extensive building regulations on this issue , so escape doors may only open in the direction of the escape route . For Germany, the special building regulations such. B. the Ordinance on Places of Assembly (VStättVO).

Left-right designation in Germany

DIN 107 is decisive for Germany (designation with left or right in construction) . This standard applies to both doors and windows and the associated frames and fittings. A clear designation, for example as DIN left or DIN right, is necessary so that when ordering, manufacturing and installing components, those communicating can be sure that they mean the same thing.

The rule below is formulated in a complicated way. As a rule of thumb, “ DIN is where the hinges are visible ”. If you open a window with the hinges on the left, it opens to the left .

DIN 107 defines the term opening area as:

The opening area is that area of ​​a sash of revolving doors, windows or shutters that is on the side towards which the sash opens.
The closing surface is in this terminology, the surface that is on the side to which the door closes.
The opening area is the reference area for the designation with left or right.

Left wing is defined as:

A left wing is a wing of swing doors, windows or shutters, the axis of rotation of which is on the left when looking at its opening area [...].

Right wing is defined as:

A right wing is a wing of swing doors, windows or shutters whose axis of rotation is on the right when looking at its opening area [...].

In addition, the code letters “L” for left-hand sash and “R” for right-hand sash are specified in DIN 107 and the left-right assignments are also extended to frames and fittings.

Directional designations in Austria

Similar to DIN 107 , ÖNORM B 5328 (Windows and doors - terminology as well as position and directional designations) regulates the directional designations for windows and doors in Austria . All definitions of terms in ÖNORM B 5328 are identical to DIN 107.
