The oil mill in Mömbris is a former oil mill in the district of Aschaffenburg in Bavaria .

geography

Originally the oil mill, then called the Grünewald oil mill and later called the Wenzelsmühle , stood opposite the Mömbriser Obermühle , at the northern end of today's Mühlgasse . After its closure and the demolition of the building, it was rebuilt at its current location, in the parking lot between the train station and the market square, together with a historic forge made of meadows . Both buildings form a small open-air museum .

The undershot water wheel and the Mühlbach

The Grünewald oil mill was built on the Kahl in 1780 as a single - storey half-timbered house on a quarry stone plinth opposite the upper mill. It was almost identical in construction to the oil mill of the lower mill, also known as the Hellenthal mill . The upper mill was a double mill and consisted of the two grain mills Hennesemühle and Gretelsmühle . At that time there were three undershot water wheels turning side by side. The mill mostly oiled flax and rapeseed seeds , but also beechnuts and hazelnuts . In 1876 the miller August Grünewald, who was also mayor of Mömbris , lived in the oil mill. Later it was taken over by his son-in-law Karl Wenzel.

The oil mill, now called Wenzelsmühle , was shut down in 1954 due to advancing industrialization and released for demolition in 1977 with the construction of State Road 2305 and the associated clearing regulation . After an application by the local history association and the subsequent municipal council resolution , the building and its interior were preserved and relocated. The course of the river Kahl was moved north, the three weirs removed and the Mühlbach filled in. The Wenceslas Mill's house on the right bank of the Kahl is now on the left due to the relocation of the river.

In mid-1977 the shell construction had progressed so far that a topping-out ceremony was celebrated. After the half-timbered house had been rebuilt, the interior furnishings such as pan mill , wedge press and furnace were carefully rebuilt. The mill wheel had to be replaced. A new mill stream, mostly laid underground in pipes, was dug and a wooden gate installed. He now leads the cold water to the mill building and drives the water wheel. Due to the fact that the statics of the framework suffered when the building was moved, it is no longer possible to put the mill into operation. The oil mill is now a listed building .

A hotel near the current location of the oil mill was named after her.
