The Austro-Hungarian Corvinus Circle ( Hungarian: Ostrák-Magyar Corvinus-kör ) is a platform with which contacts between the two neighboring states Austria and Hungary are to be established and promoted on various levels. Legally, the Corvinus Circle consists of one association in Austria and one in Hungary.

Emergence

The Corvinus Circle was founded in Sopron in 1987 and in Wiener Neustadt in 1988, i.e. before the fall of the Iron Curtain between the two countries, making it the first joint East-West organization in both countries. It was the first opportunity in Hungary to found clubs and organizations with connections to Western countries.

The name comes from the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus , who conquered Austria. The first two members were the two cities of Sopron and Wiener Neustadt . The Corvinus cup is also included in the logos of the two clubs.

Before the Iron Curtain was opened, the association already had 60 members. In 2009 there were 700 members in both Austria and Hungary, made up of personalities, entrepreneurs, organizations, municipalities, cities and counties .

In the meantime, contacts have developed in business and tourism, but also at numerous cultural and art events.

Projects and Actions

In the founding year 1987, the Corvinus Days were held in Wiener Neustadt with an exhibition and a coinage.

The first activities were based on cross-border campaigns, such as joint culture days or international cycling days. In 1988 the City of Wiener Neustadt and Eco Plus organized a business fair in Sopron with mostly Lower Austrian and Burgenland exhibitors. Conversely, Hungarian companies in Wiener Neustadt were given the opportunity to participate in a trade fair at low cost.

Such was the nature of the events up to the turn. With the opening, the possibilities of the two clubs changed suddenly. One of the first actions was, together with ÖAMTC and ADAC, to bring back the vehicles of the former GDR citizens after the pan-European picnic , who had to stay behind in Hungary.

After the opening, numerous city partnerships were arranged, such as those between Wartmannstetten and Somogyvár , Oberwart and Szombathely or Salzburg and Szeged , to name just a few.

But authorities also use this platform, such as the Burgenland State Gendarmerie Command and the Sopron Police Department, which have been cooperating closely since then.

The USiS - Hungarian in Schools project started in November 2002 . In February 2003 nine Austrian schools were interested in teaching Hungarian or in projects with Hungarian schools, and Hungarian was already being taught in five schools.

In September 2003 the first teaching materials were ready. Cross-border practice firms were also founded, which initiated the creation of a bilingual telephone directory for Western Hungary and Eastern Austria, as well as an Austro-Hungarian publishing house for the creation of a bilingual school newspaper. As part of the anniversary celebration of 15 years Corvinus-Kreis 2003, a fashion show took place as a joint production of the fashion schools HLM Wr. Neustadt and Sopron in front of the Wiener Neustadt town hall.

The Lower Austrian language offensive started in November 2003 - supported by Erwin Pröll ; in December 2003 the first exercises and documents for Hungarian lessons were available online.

In February 2004, Hungarian was taught in 30 schools in the industrial district. In the summer of 2004, students from USiS partner schools were allowed to attend a two-week intensive course at the Summer University in Debrecen . On the occasion of the “European Day of Languages” in October 2004, a competition day “All about Hungarian language and culture” took place within the framework of USiS for secondary school students in the industrial district.

Furthermore, from 2005 it was possible to register for holiday internships in Hungary. The entire language course was finished and available online. In May 2005, the teaching materials were also available in printed form, which were supplemented by an audio CD in 2006.
