The Austrian marsh cress ( Rorippa austriaca ) is a species of the genus marsh cress ( Rorippa ) within the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae).
description
The Austrian marsh cress grows as a deciduous, perennial, herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 40 to 100 cm. It has subterranean runners; the stem is branched at the top. The middle and upper stem leaves are undivided, irregularly serrated, elliptical, heart-shaped at the base, encompassing the stem with two tips and briefly hairy on the underside.
The flowering period extends from June to August. The four sepals are 1.5 to 2.5 mm long. The four yellow petals are 3 to 4 mm long. The on a 7 to 15 mm long Fruchtstiel standing Silicules is at a length of 1.5 to 3 mm, almost spherical.
The species has chromosome number 2n = 16.
ecology
In the Austrian marsh cress, a strong vegetative propagation through runners can be determined; therefore it has a soil consolidating effect on embankments and banks.
Occurrence
The Austrian marsh cress is an East European-West Asian plant species. Its distribution area includes Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, plus the Caucasus, Turkey and Kazakhstan. In Italy, France, Great Britain, Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Siberia, Japan and North America it is a neophyte. In Central Europe, its occurrence extends north to the Oder and Elbe regions, and it has been in the process of becoming naturalized in other areas in recent decades.
The Austrian Sumpfkresse preferred temporary wet, rich, light, sandy loam soil . In Central Europe it is a character species of the Agropyro (Elymo) -Rorippetum austriacae from the Agropyro-Rumicion association, but also occurs in societies of the Aegopodion or Arrhenatherion associations. It colonizes banks, also goes to paths and dams. They are rarely found on the Oder, Elbe, Rhine, Main, Neckar and Isar. In the area of the Danube and in Austria it occurs scattered.
