Östra Lagnö

Östra Lagnö is an island in Österåkers kommun in the Stockholm archipelago . Today (2009) about 30 inhabitants live on the island. In summer this number rises to 150. The reason are the many people who have their summer homes there.

The island is the third largest in Österåkers kommun. Well-known people who have lived on the island include Albert Engström , Bruno Liljefors , Per Albin Hansson and Alfred Ander .

Östra Lagnö is located in the northeastern area of Västra Lagnö on northern Ljusterö . It is connected by a bascule bridge over the Klindsund. The general network of trails ends at the village of Östra Lagnö near Hemviken on the most south-western part of the island. In the northeast of the island is the Själbottna-Östra-Lagnö nature reserve , which is managed by the Stockholm Archipelago Foundation ( Skärgårdsstiftelsen in Swedish ). The area of the nature reserve has a total area of 65 hectares . Brännholmen is located in the eastern part of the reserve. This place is a popular destination for sunbathing and swimming with elongated flat rocks and direct access to ferry traffic.

The island originally consisted of two parts with a sound from Bystaviken in the north to Ramsdal in the south. The eastern part was called Östra Lagnö island at that time. By land masses , the island grew together into one piece. The swamps around the Insjön ( German  inland lake ) are still reminiscent of the former water limit .

history

The island was first mentioned in the 13th century. Back then it was still called Enlang . This happened in connection with the voyages of Waldemar II (Denmark) as part of King Waldemar's sailing route across the Baltic Sea . The oldest resident of Östra Lagnö known by name was the farmer Olof Nilsson. He was mentioned in a register of residents from 1639.

Östra Lagnö was hard hit by the Russian devastation in 1719 in the closing stages of the Great Northern War . The two farms on the island, which were inhabited by the farmers Nils and Erik Persson, were first plundered and burned down by the Russians.

The farmers on Östra Lagnö started early to deliver firewood to the capital Stockholm. At the same time, they disposed of the city's rubbish, which they plowed into their fields.

When steam shipping got going in the 19th century , many Stockholmers rented summer houses on the island. Simultaneously with the start of steam shipping, the opportunity arose to found an artists' colony on Östra Lagnö for Albert Engström, Bruno Liljefors, Anders Zorn and many others in 1894.
