Ingmarsö is an island in Österåkers kommun in the Stockholm archipelago . The island takes its name from the many lakes that have been on it since ancient times ( Inmar = Old Swedish for inland lake). There are still many lakes on the island today. The best known are the Storträsk , Lillträsk , Bergmar and Maren . The westernmost part of the island consists of the Brottö peninsula . About a thousand years ago the sea level was about five meters higher than it is today. This means that most of today's Ingmarsö was under water. From the scattered small islands that existed at the time, the landmass known today was formed.

history

Ingmarsö was mentioned for the first time in an old land register from 1539. The four farmers on the island had to pay taxes to Gustav I. Wasa and these were noted there. The tax consisted, among other things, of half a ton (around 62 liters today) of cod . Another milestone in the history of the island was when Charles VI. created a staff financing system. By means of this it was possible on the island to entertain a boatman (at that time a kind of military outpost) with a boatswain 's kate. The cottage was completed in 1694. This still exists today and is the Norrgårdenskolan ( German  North Garden School ).

Life in the archipelago was poor and hard work, but the population grew. In the 19th century, slash and burn operations began on the island . This served to gain larger arable land in order to supply the growing population. In 1910 there were 223 people on the island who were recorded in the official register . As early as 1867 children started to be taught on the island and the school building was inaugurated in 1901. This was rebuilt and expanded, but the children were taught up to the seventh grade at most. The only shop on the island is almost as old as the school. It opened in 1887 and has been in continuous use ever since. In 1998, this business took over responsibility for the post office on the island. From 1930, tourism began to establish itself on the island. There were many guests from Stockholm. These either rented from the locals or built their own houses.

today

Today about 150 people live on Ingmarsö. There are 30 registered companies. Among other things, a boat yard , a boat building school, a plastic factory, a taxi center, a restaurant, the shop with a pharmacy, the system store , a post office and a bakery.

The island is served by the two passenger lines Waxholmsbolaget and Cinderellabåtarna . There is also a water taxi . The official moorings are in Ingmarsö Södra and Ingmarsö Norra.
