Ümit Güney

Ümit Güney (* 1954 in Sinop , Turkey ) is a Turkish-German lecturer , editor and literary translator . He has lived in Hamburg since 1977 .

Life

Güney, who studied history at the University of Hamburg , was a co-founder of the Buntbuch Verlag , which published Turkish literature in German from the late 1970s. From 1978 to 1981 Güney published here, in collaboration with Norbert Ney , transcriptions of Nazim Hikmet's Human Landscapes into German (5 volumes) and Die Herde (1980) by Yilmaz Güney . a. further transmissions of volumes of poetry Hikmet's and the fairy tale Die verliebte Wolke (1984). Güney also published his own lyrical attempts, e.g. B. in the anthology of foreigners You made me a foreigner ... I became one (1984). The volume Aufbruch aus dem Schweigen (1985), published together with Hanne Egghardt , with stories from women in Turkey , was added to its program by the Deutsche Taschenbuchverlag in 1988 . Here he was extremely successful and had five editions in two years. After German reunification, the initial interest in translated Turkish literature and the culture of Turkish guest workers in Germany, which in the 80s had created numerous other publishers in addition to the Buntbuch Verlag, fell drastically and Buntbuch also gave up its publishing activity again.
