Þórólfsfell is a tabular volcano in southern Iceland . It reaches a height of 574 m.

Name and sagas

In the best-known manuscript about the settlement of Iceland, the land acquisition book , there is a record of a Þórólfur Asksson who took possession of the area. The farm established there was inhabited by his nephew. This nephew's son, Njáll , suffered a memorable fate and became the hero of one of the famous Icelandic sagas .

location

The tabular volcano is located in the east of Fljótshlíð and at the exit of the Þórsmörk valley .

Volcanism

The mountain dates from the Ice Age. Its lower part consists of basalt , the upper part of pillow lava , as is typical of basaltic tabular volcanoes.

The mountain gained greater fame in 2010, as the view of the eruptions in Eyjafjallajökull was particularly good from there. Internet companies also took advantage of this and set up video cameras there, which broadcast the events on the Internet.

On the west side of the mountain is the Mögugilshellir cave .

Transport links

A slope leads past the foot of the mountain and connects to the overland slope Fjallabak syðra . To the west it is an extension of the tea road to Fljótshlíð.
