The ČSD class S 499.02 (from 1988: class 242 ) is an electric locomotive of the former Czechoslovak state railway ČSD for the route network in the south and west of the former Czechoslovakia electrified with 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current . They were developed from the S 499.0 , from which it differs primarily through a different locomotive body .
development
While the S 499.0 has a locomotive body made of glass fiber reinforced plastic , the S 499.02 uses the conventionally manufactured locomotive body, as it was also used for direct current locomotives. Only the fan belt required for cooling the transformer and the high-voltage control was used instead of the large side windows. As a further change, the locomotives have an auxiliary travel switch and a device to reduce the load on the axles when train approaches and journeys on inclines. For this purpose, the locomotives were given special drawbar rods between the bogies and a special controller for the converter. As with the S 499.0 , the locomotive was controlled with 32 speed steps. Locomotives of this type were also delivered to the Bulgarian State Railways BDŽ.
A total of 86 locomotives of the S 499.02 series were put into service at ČSD. With the delivered on 30 November 1981 S 499.0286 ended at Škoda production of electric locomotives of the so-called first generation . The locomotives were based in Jihlava and Brno and perform mixed services there, from freight to express train service. Some of the locomotives received modern single-arm pantographs in the eighties.
In 1988 the locomotives were redesignated as the class 242. All locomotives came to the Czech Railways ČD after 1993 and are still in use there.
