The ČSD series S 499.0 and S 499.1 are electric locomotives for the express train service of the former Czechoslovak state railway ČSD for the route network in the south and west of what was then Czechoslovakia, electrified with 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current . They were developed from the S 489.0 , from which they differ mainly in their higher top speed. Locomotives of this type were also delivered to Bulgaria and what was then the USSR .

history

240 066 in Bratislava (2014)

70 locomotives of the class S 499.0 were built in 1968 and 50 in 1969. These locomotives were stationed on the Czech side in Pilsen , Cheb and České Budějovice ( Budweis ), on the Slovak side in Bratislava and Nové Zámky . In 1970, 25 locomotives of the S 499.1 series were procured to haul the express trains between Kutná Hora and Bratislava and on the Zvolen –Nové Zámky route. After their procurement, the production of locomotives with locomotive bodies made of glass fiber reinforced plastic ended . Some of the S 499.1 series locomotives ran on the Budapest – Kutná Hora route. With the appearance of the multi-system locomotive ES 499.0 and its successor, these machines then took over these services. The locomotives of the S 499.1 series were then dismantled into the S 499.0 series. The first S 499.1 was dismantled to the S 499.0 series in 1978.

In 1988 all locomotives, including the former S 499.1 series, were re-designated as the 240 series.

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, most of the locomotives remained with the Railway of the Slovak Republic (ŽSR), today ZSSK . Only a small part came to the Czech Railways (ČD). The locomotives are now at home in the depots in Bratislava and Nové Zámky (ZSSK) and České Budějovice (ČD).

Conversion to the ČD series 340

340 062 in České Budějovice (2009)

The locomotives with the serial numbers 049, 055 and 062 were converted into dual-system locomotives of the 340 series in 2001 and 2003 , which can also run under a contact line voltage of 15 kV, 16.7 Hz. The vehicles kept their old serial numbers. They are used on the cross-border route from České Budějovice to Summerau .

technical features

The most important changes compared to the S 489.0 are the transmission ratio between the drive motor pinion and the large wheel of 1: 3.2, the electric brake and a pneumatic DAKO L / R brake. Otherwise both series are identical.

The locomotive body is not made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic on every machine; there are also locomotives with a sheet-metal locomotive body. All locomotives for the Soviet State Railways (SŽD) were manufactured with a locomotive body made of sheet steel.
