The former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) designated two prototypes of four-axle diesel multiple units as M 475.0001 and M 475.0002 . The two vehicles were built in 1974 by Vagonka Tatra in Studénka as a test vehicle for a planned but not built series of railcars for regional traffic.

history

The two railcars were manufactured in 1973 and 1974 according to the design documents of the Institute for Rail Vehicles in Prague (VÚKV). They were initially given the numbers M 474.0001 and M 474.0002, it was not until 1975 that the series designation was changed to M 475.0 . Conceptually, the vehicles were based on the previous M 296.1 series . The main difference to these was the now underfloor built-in drive system, which enabled a significant increase in the passenger compartment.

The two railcars were first extensively tested on the railway test ring in Velim and on the ČSD routes. During test drives on the Strakonice – Volary and Volary – Čičenice routes in the Bohemian Forest, the M 475.0001 reached a continuous speed of 24 km / h on a 30-per-thousand gradient with a trailer load of 170 t.

Series delivery of the M 475.0 was originally planned from 1978. 260 series vehicles were planned, which were to be delivered to ČSD by 1985. Due to a lack of production capacities at Vagonka Tatra, but also at the supplier companies Turčianské strojárne and ČKD , this did not happen. Ultimately, at the end of the 1980s, the new 842 series with similar parameters was designed as a successor.

The two prototypes were later used by the ČSD on the Hradec Králové - Turnov connection in scheduled operation. In 1993 both came to the Czech Railways (ČD).

The former M 475.0001 (860.001) has been preserved as an inoperable exhibit in the National Technical Museum in Prague . The vehicle is currently stored in a museum depot in Chomutov .

technical features

The car body is designed as a self-supporting, welded steel structure made of pressed and bent steel girders and profiles.

The cooler, ventilation and parts of the electrical equipment were arranged on the roof.

The drive system with motor and traction generator is located below the floor. This is elastically suspended at six points under the car floor. The 6-cylinder underfloor diesel engine was manufactured by Turčianské strojárne Martin under a license from Pielstick . The engine is started by the generator. All four axles of the railcar are driven by central bearing motors in the bogies. On a trial basis, the M 475.0001 received a thyristor control for power regulation.

As is generally the case with railcars, the passenger compartments are heated by using the waste heat from the engine cooling circuit. Two temperature regulators in the passenger compartments ensure a constant interior temperature between 21 and 23 ° C.
