The Šárka valley

The Šárka Valley (Czech: Šárecké údolí ) is located in the northwest of the Czech capital Prague . It includes a partly wooded park landscape on both banks of the Šárecký creek (lower section of the Litovický creek ) before its confluence with the Vltava . The valley has a settlement history that goes back thousands of years. At present it is a nature reserve and a recreational area for the residents of Prague. The upper part (between Džbán Dam and Jenerálka ) is called Divoká Šárka (Wilde Šárka), the lower part (below Jenerálka) is called Tichá Šárka (Silence Šárka) or Dolní Šárka (Lower Šárka).

The valley belongs to the administrative district of Prague 6 and borders the densely built-up districts of Liboc , Veleslavín and Dejvice in the south . In the east it extends to the Vltava, in the west to the international airport . The open landscape begins in the north. The Šárka valley includes both culturally and historically significant remnants of rural settlements as well as gorges and rock formations of natural interest. The Šárka castle , a prehistoric settlement and a national cultural monument, lies above the valley .

natural reserve

Apart from a few inaccessible places, the landscape is shaped by at least 7,000 years of human settlement and use as pasture and arable land. The plant communities of the xerothermal semi- arid grasslands , which have developed as a result of extensive agriculture, are particularly worthy of protection . The forest, on the other hand, was only created through afforestation in the course of the 20th century. A large part of the area was declared the Šárka – Lysolaje Nature Park on 1005 hectares in 1990 . A nature reserve and seven natural monuments are designated within the park . From west to east these are:

  • Divoká Šárka nature reserve : rocks on both sides of Šárecký potok above the Džbán dam. The gorges that the stream cut into the Lydite rock are overgrown with warmth-loving vegetation on the south-facing slopes and ferns on the shady north-facing slopes. In the valley there are remains of an alluvial forest. The plateaus above the gorges had been inhabited since prehistoric times. In 1964, the reserve was the first area in Prague to be protected.
  • Vizerka Natural Monument : A rocky southern slope, largely forested, with remains of continental steppe grass (Festucion valesiacae). The place name refers to a still existing property from the early 19th century, currently (2010) an excursion restaurant.
  • Jenerálka natural monument : rocky hill with xerothermal dry grass communities and a striking landscape element
  • Zlatnice natural monument : a former, now wooded heathland on a rocky north-west slope. The location is named after a lost farm and excursion restaurant, which, under its German name Schipkapaß, became the setting of a novel by Karl Hans Strobl .
  • Nad Mlýnem natural monument : rocky southern slope with remains of steppe vegetation (Sedo albi-Allietum montani), mostly overgrown with forest and shrubbery.
  • Dolní Šárka natural monument : slopes of the valley on the lower reaches of the Šárecký creek just before it flows into the Vltava. The settlement of the same name is located in the valley. The protected area includes three rocky slopes named after the farms Duchoňská, Šatovka and Žežulka. The slopes are former pastureland and vineyards, partly still overgrown with dry grass (Festuco-Brometea), partly covered with bushes.
  • Natural monument Baba : Steep rock on the bank of the Vltava south of the mouth of the Šárecký potok. The locality is rich in species of heat-loving insects such as wild bees , wasps, beetles and bedbugs. On the summit there is an artificial romantic ruin from the 19th century.
  • Housle natural monument : North of the actual Šárka valley lies the Housle gorge, a striking geological profile that shows sediments of the Upper Cretaceous .
