The Škoda Muzeum is a vehicle museum in the Czech city of Mladá Boleslav right next to the Škoda Auto plant . The manufacturer's vehicles are on display in the museum.

history

The Laurin & Klement company was founded here on December 18, 1895, originally as a bicycle manufacturer. At that time, Laurin & Klement was the largest bicycle manufacturer in the country. The production of motorcycles began in the year it was founded, and cars were also manufactured from 1905. In 1925 Laurin & Klement was sold to the heavy industry group Škoda based in Plzeň . The automobile branch was spun off as a state company after the Second World War . This company was privatized in 1990 and has been part of the Volkswagen Group since then as Škoda Auto .

Until 2012, the museum was housed in several former factory halls, dominated by vehicles from the period after 1945. Due to a lack of space, exhibits were repeatedly replaced with models from the depot. The early history of the Laurin & Klement company took up a large area in the entrance area. As the predecessor company of Škoda, it was the most important producer of bicycles and later motorcycles in the Bohemian region. The bicycles produced, like motorcycles and cars later, were less equipped with technical innovations than mass-produced goods for normal wage earners. The bicycles were intended for the broad mass market, had no gears and were equipped with the back-pedaling hubs from Fichtel & Sachs that were common at the time . Škoda has only produced a few luxury models such as the Hispano Suiza 25/100 or Škoda VOS , which were and are also on display in the museum.

Today's exhibition

The building is part of a 100-year-old factory complex that was built between 1898 and 1912 and where cars were produced until 1926. The building was still in industrial use in the 1970s. After 9 months of renovation, the museum reopened on November 26, 2012. Today, the museum extends to around 1800 m² in the former production halls of Laurin & Klement and shows 45 cars and numerous individual exhibits.

The renovated old building is characterized by white walls, oak parquet and a clearly structured, restrained interior design. The exhibition is divided into the subject areas “Tradition”, “Evolution” and “Precision” and is arranged around a central event hall. The collection includes around 300 vehicles, and a restoration takes around 1800 to 5000 hours.
