Štěpán Zavřel (born December 25, 1932 in Prague , Czechoslovakia , † February 25, 1999 in Rugolo , Sarmede , Treviso Province , Italy ) was a Czech painter , graphic artist and children's book author .

Life

After leaving school at Prague's Jan-Neruda -Gymnasium Zavřel worked in the 1950s in Prague as an artist among others in the animation studios of Jiří Trnka . In 1959 he managed to escape to Italy via Yugoslavia , after having previously received an exit visa for filming in Albania .

In the following years Zavřel studied in Rome at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma and traveled all over Europe. He wrote his own children's books and illustrated books by other authors. In 1968, after the end of the Prague Spring , he settled in the small village of Rugolo in the province of Treviso in Veneto , where he lived until his death, where he founded an International School of Illustration .

aftermath

  • The Bohem Press publishing house, founded by Zavřel in 1971 together with Otakar Božejovský in Zurich, still exists today.
  • The Premio Štěpán Zavřel bears his name.
  • In the Museo Artistico Štěpán Zavřel in the Castello di Brazzà exhibits on his life and work etc. are shown.
