history

Church of St. Peter and Paul in Żyrzyn

The origin of the word Żyrzyn is said to be derived from the Slavic żyrny , which means food and bread. This is supported by the fact that the arable land in the area is suitable for growing grain.

Żyrzyn is first mentioned in the Annales seu Chronicae incliti Regni Poloniae by Jan Długosz . It was the property of a nobleman that belonged to the parish of Końskowola . Later Żyrzyn went to the noble Jarzyna family , then at the end of the 16th century to the Męciński family . The mother of the Jesuit and missionary Wojciech Męciński (1598–1643) is said to have built a church in 1623, which existed until 1803, when the original wooden structure was to be replaced by a massive building, which was, however, connected with interruptions. Construction work only continued in 1838. It is a plastered rotunda with an antique portico . The manor existed until 1944, today the manor is used as a school.
