Žarko Muljačić

Žarko Muljačić (born October 2, 1922 in Split ; † August 6, 2009 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian linguist, Romanist and Italianist who taught in Berlin, among other places.

life and work

Muljačić studied at the University of Zagreb with Petar Skok and Mirko Deanović . From 1947 to 1950 he was grammar school teacher in Pula and Split , from 1950 to 1953 archivist in Dubrovnik , then assistant at the University of Zagreb. He received his doctorate in 1955 under Mirko Deanović at the University of Zagreb with the thesis Tomo Basiljević-Baselji predstavnik prosvjećenja u Dubrovniku (Belgrade 1958). He completed his habilitation in 1960 with the thesis Dalmatski elementi u mletački pisanim dubrovačkim dokumentima 14. st. Prilog raguzejskoj dijakronoj fonologiji i dalmatsko-mletačkoj konvergencij .

From 1956 Muljačić taught at the newly founded Philosophical Faculty in Zadar (later University of Zadar ), first as a lecturer until 1961, then as associate professor until 1965, finally until 1972 as professor of Italian linguistics (from 1964 to 1966 also as dean). From 1973 to 1988 Muljačić was a professor at the Free University of Berlin . From 1977 he was a corresponding member of the Yugoslav (later Croatian) Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Muljačić received the Premio Galileo Galilei dei Rotary Club Italiani Sezione Storia della Lingua Italiana in 1983.
