(1322) Coppernicus is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on June 15, 1934 by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory at the University of Heidelberg .

The name is derived from the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus . The spelling preferred by his biographer Leopold Prowe was chosen.
