(16498) Passau (also 1990 SX 8 ) is an asteroid that was discovered on September 22, 1990 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst from the La Silla Observatory . The asteroid is named after the Bavarian three-river city of Passau .

The US Minor Planet Center (MPC), which is responsible for confirming a space body as a "small planet" and for naming it, officially confirmed the entry and name in October 2006.
