(1682) Karel is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on August 2, 1949 by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth in Heidelberg .

The asteroid is named after the son of the Dutch astronomers Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld .
