(17579) Lewkopelew is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on October 5, 1994 by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen at the Thuringian state observatory in Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .
The asteroid was named after the Russian Germanist and writer Lev Zinovievich Kopelew (1912–1997).
