(2343) Siding Spring is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 25 June 1979 by the astronomer Eleanor F. Helin and scolding J. Bus at the Siding Spring Observatory near Coonabarabran in New South Wales , Australia was discovered.
The asteroid is named after the community where the Australian National Observatory, Anglo-Australian Observatory and UK Schmidt telescopes are located. The asteroid is the first asteroid discovered with the UK Schmidt Telescope to have an official number.
moon
On December 1, 2015, the discovery of a moon at (2343) Siding Spring was announced (designation: S / 2015 (2343) 1). The discovery is based on observations of light curves from various observatories. The moon is almost a kilometer in diameter. Its distance from the main body is given as about 7 kilometers. Further observations are necessary to determine more precise orbit data (orbital time and actual orbit radius); The mass of the system can be determined more precisely from such data.
