(27736) Ekaterinburg is an asteroid of the Main Belt . It was discovered on September 22, 1990 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .

The asteroid bears the name of the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, which was founded in 1723 and named after the Empress Catherine I (1684–1727) .
