(3281) Maupertuis is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 24 February 1938 by the Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at Turku was discovered.

The name of the asteroid is reminiscent of the French mathematician and astronomer Pierre Louis Maupertuis .
