(4473) Sears is a main belt asteroid discovered on February 28, 1981 by Schelte John Bus at the Siding Spring Observatory .
The asteroid is named after Derek Sears , a professor at the University of Arkansas who introduced thermoluminescence as a means of studying the geological and thermal history of asteroids .
