(4721) Atahualpa is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 29, 1973 by the research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Tom Gehrels as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey .
The asteroid is named after Atahualpa , a ruler of the Incas .
