(797) Montana is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on November 17, 1914 by the Danish astronomer Holger Thiele in Hamburg-Bergedorf .
The name of the asteroid is derived from the Latin word mons (mountain) in honor of the Hamburg observatory . (797) Montana was the first minor planet to be discovered there.
