-fehn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ending -fehn (also -vehn , -venn , -fenn , -feen ) as part of place names denotes a swampy, swampy lowland or moor in the Low German region . Place names with this ending are most common in East Frisia , but also in Ammerland , in other areas of Lower Saxony and in Schleswig-Holstein .

In East Friesland and the immediately adjacent areas, a place name on -fehn often, but not always, indicates a special form of bog settlement from the 17th to the 19th century, which arose on canals driven into the bog.
