When the world ends - The weather inferno (English original title: Lightning: Fire from the Sky ) is a disaster film and takes place in the USA . It is also shown on German TV under the title 100 Million Volt - Inferno am Himmel .

action

The film is set in the American town of Rutland . He begins with the introduction of the most important people: the 14-year-old student Eric, who watches thunderstorms as a hobby and is physically involved with the weather, his father, the city policeman (Tom) and his mother Barbara.

Fed Mart

A new Fed Mart is due to open in Rutland and is currently under construction. However, there is a demonstration led by Luke Peters, the owner of the local hardware store. He fears that his business will be ruined if everyone only buys in the big supermarket but no longer from him, and he has support from the population. The policeman is also fundamentally on his side. Opposite is the construction manager of the Fed Mart, who wants to continue with the new building and points out that the demonstration is taking place on his private property and that the demonstrators have to leave it. There is a dispute between the mayor, who is in favor of the project, and the police officer, after which Luke Peters is arrested and has to be taken to a cell at the local police station.

New school year

The new school year starts too and Eric is supposed to take the daughter of the new neighbor, Chloe, with him to school. On the way to school, she tells her story: her mother died and her father is a civil engineer and is responsible for new Fed Mart projects. The students are greeted by the director of the school. Eric visits the weather station again and again. Mr. Lindley, whose wife Anna is pregnant, works there. Both make the discovery that a storm of the century is approaching Rutland. This is evident from their observations. Long before that, there were repeated experiences with lightning: For example, a scaffolding climber who was inspecting a high-current pylon in front of Rutland was struck by lightning .

Police station

At the police station, Luke notices that policeman Tom is taking care of the mayor's ticket 4146 and that it will be "dealt with" with his help. After the mayoress left for a conference, they talked about their change, since the mayoress was actually on the side of the residents and the revitalization of the inner city was one of their main concerns. Today her main concern is that she is mayor of the year, drives a chic car and that her outfit is perfect.

Weather station

Meanwhile, Eric and Mr. Lindley at the weather station discover that the current weather situation is similar to that of 200 and 100 years ago. At that time, two storm fronts turned and came towards each other in Rutland, so that they began to rotate. You decide to bring this to the attention of the St. Louis Weather Bureau so they can issue a warning. The chances are bad, however, as there have been false positives in the past. Attempts to convince head Porter Randall fail.

city

The thunderstorm fronts are having their first effects near the city: a soccer field and the school are hit by lightning. The school is badly devastated, the principal injured and taken to the hospital, where funding has been cut by 10% after the renovation and after the title of mayor of the year. While the school is being investigated by the local authorities, they learn that Chloe is on good terms with her father, but Eric is not on good terms with his father, which must have something to do with his brother Jason. After an argument with his father, who does not take the son's warnings seriously and who is annoyed by his son's thunderstorm hobby, Eric drives to the weather station. However, Charles (Mr. Lindley) drives to his wife Anna, who is pregnant. On the way to the hospital, a power pole is struck by lightning and falls on the car in which they are both. This means that there are power cables on and next to the car, making it difficult or even impossible to get out of the situation yourself. Both are freed by the policeman while Luke Peters is released from custody at the police station and is on the phone.

thunderstorm

The situation at the Fed Mart construction site is deteriorating: the thunderstorm has meanwhile reached the construction project. The site manager still does not want to finish the work, but the security engineer lets it abort because Eric has triggered the alarm in the weather station and the poor visibility does not allow any further work. While the safety engineer informs all construction workers that they can stop, he too is struck by lightning and dies.

Weather warning

At the weather station, Eric tried several times to convince the national weather bureau in St. Louis of a warning, but to no avail. He triggers an alarm and broadcasts a warning on the radio. After the lightning strikes Chloe's apartment, she drives to him and keeps him company. They talk about the relationship between him and his father. This has been very bad since Brother Jason's death. Eric only says so much about his brother that he was a quarterback and a grade 1 student. The national weather office received a lot of emergency reports that evening, so the meteorologist apologized to Eric. The situation is getting worse and the thunderstorms are getting stronger. Porter Randall from the weather bureau decided to send an observation plane into the area. This is struck by lightning in a thunderstorm and explodes.

hospital

The situation is also coming to a head in the local hospital. More and more injured people have to be treated due to the storm. However, after a lightning strike in the power plant, it fails and the power supply collapses. The emergency generator will last a while, but will fail later. The solution is for the generator to be fetched from the construction site by Fed Mart and supplied to the hospital. Luke Peters and the construction manager at Fed Mart get along again because the generator would not have been connected without a connection from Luke Peters' hardware store. The site manager decides to quit Fed Mart and wants to start a new life in Rutland. He also wants more time for his daughter Chloe.

solution

There is also a solution for the thunderstorm: The idea is that the city's crude oil tanks are blown up. This is supposed to be done with the help of the missile that Eric has in his room. If this is connected with a wire and shot off the tanks, there is an explosion. This explosion burns oxygen and creates a vacuum with suction that pulls the storm downwards in a funnel shape. During the trip, Eric and his father Tom make up again. Eric's brother Jason died in an accident and both blamed themselves for the event. After a discussion, both work together and the idea works, the storm dissipates. The mayor arrives and is confused about the detonation of the tanks, but is arrested because police officer Tom has since learned that she has been bribed. So the car was given to her and she was given all rights of first refusal for the adjacent land. Finally, the severe weather warning is lifted by Eric.
